Programs

The Career Center offers a variety of workshops and events especially created to serve the career development and job search needs of graduate and postdoctoral appointees. These programs are offered throughout the year and include, but are not limited to:
Career Planning and Job Search Skills Workshops for Those with Advanced Degrees
Finding a job and planning one’s career requires strategic information and techniques. Through a series of workshops, graduate students and postdoctoral appointees will have the opportunity to become proficient at these techniques. All workshops are presented by a professional career strategist and executive coach. These workshops will include:
  • Interviewing for Academic and Non-Academic Positions
  • Salary and Benefits Negotiation
  • Networking or Notworking
  • How to Find Non-Academic Jobs
  • Resume/CV Preparation
  • Interviewing When English is Not Your First Language
Workshops will be offered at a variety of times throughout the year on both the Medical School and Hilltop Campuses. In addition, once per month, two workshops will be offered in an integrated format on a Saturday morning.

Job Search Acceleration Teams
Land a great career building job in less time! Join one of our job search acceleration teams, an internationally recognized method for securing a job. Teams meet at the Hilltop and Medical School campuses.

Other Career Center Signature Events
In addition to the aforementioned events designed specifically for graduate students and postdoctoral appointees, the Career Center hosts a variety of other special workshops and events to provide information about the world of work and life beyond your tenure at Washington University. Check the Calendar of Events to learn more about these programs. They include but are not limited to:
  • The Etiquette Dinner
  • Lunch With a Pro
  • Friday Forums
  • Networking Receptions
Students and alumni of the graduate school may use the Career Center's recommendation file service throughout their professional lives.

Career Connections is Washington University’s on-line networking database. Over 8,000 alumni and parents have agreed to serve as a resource to Washington University students as they engage in career exploration. This excellent networking tool contains individuals who are geographically, culturally, and professionally diverse and includes alumni and parents at various career milestones. Through this tool, one can learn about particular prospective employment organizations and possibly about appropriate contacts within those organizations. The Career Center Library offers a variety of online and print resources to assist in researching career fields and job search targets, write a curriculum vitae/resume, and identify internship and employment opportunities. The Library is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
