Benefits of Internship Programs

Did you know that internship programs are the number one method for finding new hires? Hosting a Washington University intern is a mutually beneficial arrangement.

By having a Washington University intern, your organization will:
  • Gain an extra set of hands for special projects
  • Benefit year-round from the energy and enthusiasm of our students
  • Have a cost-effective work force
  • Broaden the image of your organization in the community and on campus
  • Evaluate a student for the possibility of long-term employment
Interning also allows a student to:
  • Gain real-world experience and learn new skills
  • "Try-on" a career
  • Learn about your organization and industry
If you would like to create an internship program or update your program, we can provide you with the necessary information and resources to make it happen!
Characteristics of Quality Internships

We focus on opportunities that bring the best experience for our students. Characterstics of high quality internships include:
  • Student intern(s) should spend 80% of his or her time on substantive work projects
  • Opportunities to observe and participate with professionals (staff and client meetings, presentations, etc.)
  • A mentor or supervisor to provide guidance
  • Opportunity to develop specific skills (writing, research, presentation, industry-specific, etc.)
  • Evaluation and feedback throughout the internship and at the conclusion

Internship FAQs

My organization has interns each semester. Do I need to submit a new positing each time?
When you submit your position posting, include what periods the internship is offered (Fall, Spring, and/or Summer) and what the deadlines are for each period. We will update your internship for each semester it is offered.

How are students compensated for internships?
At Washington University, students may intern for pay, academic credit, or experience. A student may not receive both pay and credit for one single internship.

What are the benefits of paying an intern? Financial need prevents some highly qualified students from pursuing unpaid opportunities. We encourage you to offer compensation for internships, in the form of either an hourly wage or a stipend. When you are expecting a student to bring in specific skills and make specific contributions to your organization, payment is very appropriate. Paid internships help to attract the most highly qualified students, as well as solidify time commitments from interns. Being paid will further enhance the intern's feeling of being an employee and acting like one. By paying interns, organizations also avoid any potential questions regarding Wage and Hour Law issues.

If you are unable to pay, you may consider offering some other form of payment (reimbursement for transportation, parking, meals, free training/workshops, etc.).

What is the process for receiving academic credit?
According to the Washington University Internship Policy, students may receive up to three units of academic credit for an unpaid internship. The student will work with a faculty sponsor and internship site supervisor to complete a Learning Agreement, outlining the student’s internship responsibilities, learning objectives, and evaluation requirements. Students must complete the Learning Agreement prior to beginning their internship; credit cannot be awarded retroactively.

If I hire an unpaid intern, what is my organization’s liability?
Students are covered under Washington University’s General Liability Policy if the internship is done for credit. Credit must be arranged prior to starting the internship. Contact us at 314-935-5930 if you have any questions.
