Fiona’s Four Questions for a Peer

by Fiona Lyons-Carlson, Design & Content Intern

  1. What was the process of finding your summer internship like? What sort of work were you tasked with at Saylor?

I won’t lie, finding my internship was a long process, and I scrambled a bit toward the end. In the end, I found my design internship at Saylor Agency through a LinkedIn listing, researched them, and really enjoyed the range of their work. Their fun design-related questions in the application stood out to me, and I also believe my answers played a role in my acceptance.

  1. Could you speak to one of your favorite or most challenging tasks, and what stood out to you about it?

The best part about interning at Saylor was working with so many big-name clients. In my first week, I had already gotten to design Instagram stories for Hulu. Throughout the summer, I created social media posts (mostly Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube) for Paramount+, PlutoTV, Netflix, and Onyx Collective. My favorite project was designing merchandise for Disney+ Fall 2024 Mailers. These packages were sent to 100+ influencers to promote new TV shows. Seeing my work be manufactured and in the hands of other is absolutely unbelievable.

  1. How did skills from your coursework at Sam Fox come into play at your internship? Were there new things about the design field which you hadn’t learned in your courses?

A lot of basic 2D-design foundations came into play at work, especially for retainer clients with established styles. It was always a matter of coming up with new compositions that fit their social media feed. At school, we tend to focus on creating personal projects and I learned a lot this summer about how to quickly appeal to a global audience.

  1. What do you feel is central to your own design practice?

Visual storytelling is key to my design practice. I think it’s important to create narratives and I often enjoy including a personal tie in my work. It helps me ground abstract ideas and connect with my audience on a deeper level. (edited)
